Danish Diplomat | Peace & Security | Author of IR Career Starters
Alexander Borum (born 29 September 1984 in Skive, Denmark) is a Danish diplomat working at the intersection of foreign policy, peace and security and EU-AU cooperation at the Department for Africa, Development Policy and Financing within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.
Alexander has worked with the European Union on strategic missions in Somalia and the Horn of Africa, advised on UN resolutions, and contributed to shaping Europe’s external action through the European External Action Service (EEAS) engagements.
Alexander Borum has a diverse background in consultancies, think tanks and is a NATO ISAF Veteran. In his spare time, he produces the IR Career Starters newsletter, supports the new cohorts of international affairs professionals and is a frequent speaker at conferences, universities and societies.

The Newsletter
The first edition of IR Career Starters was published on July 2022 and has since grown to 46.000 subscribers. Each edition is published at the start of the month, with aim of a first Thursday in the month release. IR Career Starters is the third iteration of sharing positions in IR, predated by two versions of the Entry-Level jobs in International Affairs compilations predating it.
Alongside the newsletter, there are several general guide articles, a handful of how-to guides and a general overview of what is out there in terms of upper-tier entry-level opportunities with the big international organisations. These articles were originally posted on LinkedIn Pulse, and has proven helpful in guiding and mentoring in the field of IR.
In addition, I do support these efforts with lectures and mentoring, and I do enjoy giving frank insights to students on what they can expect, since I find that the overall portrayal of career-building in IR is painted in rosy colours and do not encapsulate the challenges ahead.
